the Imperial Band Ban

Last night the Imperialists imperialized the basement of club midway in the lower east side. i was tired, not drunk, late to the show and was playing mikeeast's bass, which hates me and always makes crackling pops and snaps if i move even a little. and i move a lot. however, we had a good crowd and we have been practicing a lot and are tight like virgins.

mikey electric is part of an organization named hospitality club and regulary hosts foreigners on his luxurious couches and floors (and beds (!)) in a very clever effort to 1) hook up with easy foreign chicks, and 2) to get free accomodations while traveling europe with gorgeous joe borges this summer. this past week he had some fun mexican girls (four in all (two 19 year olds)) staying with him. they really wanted to see how awesome we are since all we ever do is talk about how awesome we are and mikey and joe (one or the other came up with it, i blame them both) came up with a genius ploy to get the two non drinking aged se~noritas into the show. They're back up singers in the band.

So we rocked it hard. I felt sloppy and smashed mike's bass on my head and drank his beer and fucked up here and there, but we had all the kids dancing (of highest importance) and drew our good share for another super night of streetwave. unfortunately, however, not as excellent as any streetwave night at the FREE ottos
. but thats another (better) deal.

I'm not sure who or how, but someone notfied the INS about the illegal aliens that the imperilaists had illegally imperilaized into midway, and not only were they asked to leave, but the imperialists were banned from playing that bar. its a shame because $5 is ok in new york for a rock show, and they have food and a nice sound girl, but fuck them. otto's is cheaper, freer, tikkier, and they don't card at the door. (shhhh) its the first time that my band has been banned from a bar, and it hasn't been my drunken faults (see: the scene circa 2002 and cbgb's circa 2004).


After us were the almost naked invincible gods who had a smaller crowd after la migra's raid, but it was a fun danceathon of rock and roll. after them the band of gold screamed at us about wanting lots of pretty flowers because christ man doesnt do the dishes and sang about california and kept the dance party going all the way until a fairly new (to new york city) band got on stage. camera head shark really impressed me when they played with the oaots at ottos in march (best show ever). they rock some quirky pop alla pavement and fountains of wayne (whose guitarist i met at some bar in the city last week). the first song on their myspace is in some language that i dont think they even understand, or its french. but watch the video!

Hey Kiddies,

Long time no KOK blog.

I have been going thru some shit lately, but have worked thru it and am living more and more like a rock and roll god in new york city every day. The OAOTs are rocking a sweet Tiki Bar in the ultra cool lower east side for Streetwave which Shawn Christ Man and I have been running lately, booking lots of shows and bringing lots of hoes. Soon I will write you guys with more and more bands, because there are a lot of them out here. and lots of good ones. So here is, one month later, the awesomeness that was Mardi Gras 2007. The Imperialists and Screaming Females opened up, but are not in the video. It opens up with the Hungry Marching Band, then the NY Howl (with some extra brass) and closing up are my new roommates, Eisenhower with some lovely ladies dance dance dancing. WIth pasties!

Howlin’ New York

A band that I have noticed has been getting a lot of attention since I moved out here is the New York Howl. The lead singing giant, Andrew Katz, has, not surprisingly, been friends with the kids from Plastic East for a few years now. If I recall they worked at the Bowery Poetry Club together, where I was introduced to these crazy cats’ energetic throwback dance parties in the summer. They know they are good, and their crowds never fail to be great. They played the ultra hip underground Rubalad party a few months back and just finished a residency at Crash Mansion, where I saw them play once. That night they were followed by a punk rock karaoke band and I destroyed Orgasm Addict, but of course I was no way near as entertaining as these Hip Kats. Get it? Ha!

Here’s how they humbly describe themselves, “insanely energetic live shows deliver raw punk energy, soulful uplifting gospel, dirty blues and uncomfortable silence.” So they are fun. They have no bass; just a keyboard, sax, punk drums, and usually a guitar. Everyone dances. That’s all that matters.
They are playing with the Screaming Females, Eisenohwer, and the Invincible Gods at their Mardi Gras Party at the Luna Lounge. The party is usually at the Eisenhower’s loft, where we have had the chance to play twice, but they are from Louisiana, and do Mardi Gras parties right. Maybe too right beacuse there was no way they were gonna do it at their place again. And its for a good cause, the People’s Hurricane Relief Fund.

So there’s a cool new band you can dig on, and a fun goings on in New York that you probably didn’t know about.

"Underground"

The Move...

I was really excited moving out to New York City about six months ago. I had played three shows in town, which sucked, but I always had a good time, despite the blizzards, flu and frozen toes. But living out here is a completely different experience. There are so many people. A lot of them are cool. A lot suck. Most you ignore. The same with bands.

Finding a Drummer...

We met Joe Borges at our first show at the Knitting Factory for the Screaming Females’ record release of this genius band’s first album. He became our drummer about a month prior, when I asked Mike and Glen, formerly Plastic East, if they knew any drummers. “Joe’s a drummer,” and then “Joe is an amazing drummer,” is what they said. He plays music with a lot of his friends, including the Imperialists but had never been in a serious –ha- band and had never played a live show before. -!- I think he agreed to be the drummer that night that I met him in person, right after getting my face ripped off by Marisa (of the Screaming Females). She rocks it. He rocks it. That’s it. And he’s well mannered, exactly so to Sounds Like Vinyl and the One And Only Typical’s standards.

The Scene...

We have met a couple of bands out here that are a lot of fun, mostly through Streetwave. The Atomic Missiles are now The Invincible Gods. Our good friends Eisenhower throw amazing fucking parties in their loft and even built a stage in their kitchen, where The Imperialists played their first show on Halloween. We are playing with a band called Rabid Roy in a few weeks in midtown. They are cool guys. We saw The Invincible Gods play a keg basement party in New Brunswick (Where Rutgers is, and where Plastic East, The Atomic Missiles, and the screaming females all met or live or something) with Rabid Roy. I got trashed. By the end of the night. around 7:30, by the neighborhood watch’s standard it was too loud too late during Rabid’s set and the cops came in. Undercover. Nick Fury, Kyrsten and I were walking down the driveway, in the rain, as two plain clothes cops crept up to the back door. But we kept in touch with Roy and they asked us to play in February. Then we play our favorite Trash Bar.

So we’ve met cool people, bands, and places to play. Now we just need a hundred more people to come see us play each night and we will be golden. We also need to practice, but that’s another story altogether.
